According to a spokesperson from the Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission in Chennai, these arrested Sri Lankan fishermen has told the Indian Coast Guards that their boats strayed into Indian waters due to gusty wind.
The Sri Lankan Deputy High Commission spokesperson told Asian Tribune that these 20 fishermen from Puttalam will face soon the Joint Interrogation Committee to ascertain their motives for straying into the Indian waters.
The Joint Interrogation Committee will be headed by Collector of Tuticorin and the representatives Coast Guards, Police and Department of Fisheries. Also representatives from Sri Lanka Deputy High Commission in Chennai will participate in the committee’s deliberations.
Spokesperson of the High Commission also disclosed that at the last Joint Interrogation Committee, which met in Chennai on 15 of December has released all the 53 Sri Lankan fishermen and their boats.
Out of these 53 fishermen, 11 of them are from Negambo who were arrested with 2 boats on 12 December and balance 42 fishermen in 20 boats were arrested on 7 December.
It is learnt these 53 fishermen and their boats will be released soon.
